The Safari Rally Kenya will continue to be a part of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar through 2026, following a three-year extension of its contract. This decision was solidified in Monaco during the Rally Monte-Carlo, with agreements exchanged by WRC Promoter’s managing director, Jona Siebel, Kenya’s cabinet secretary for sports, Amina Mohamed, and Phineas Kimathi, president of the Kenya Motor Sports Federation.
The Safari Rally, a notable African event, made a strong return to the WRC last year after a 19-year hiatus. Encouraged by this success, both parties were eager to secure a longer-term presence on the WRC calendar, marking the longest contract of its kind for the series.
In addition to the extension, there are plans to expand the Safari Rally from its current three-day format to five days. President William Ruto of Kenya has instructed the Ministry of Sports to collaborate with the FIA and WRC to fulfill this expansion by the Easter holiday, aiming to boost the event’s economic impact. This extension and expansion are expected to enhance Kenya's global image, attract more tourists and investors, and significantly benefit the local economy by creating more jobs and business opportunities.
